Sometimes we take little things for granted. Do you ever think about how difficult it would be if you were on your period, but homeless? Many of the 3.5 million Americans who experience homelessness each year have limited access to and few places to turn for period products. I’m so excited to be partnering up with Kotex today on something that we should all be taking a part in and that is Power To The Period Project. Inspired by a tweet from Holly Sanchez and executed in partnership with DoSomething.org, the U by Kotex Power to the Period drive encourages people to buy and donate an extra pack of period products to a homeless shelter.
Holly Sanchez inspired Power to the Period with a Twitter post calling for everyone to buy an extra box of pads or tampons when shopping for feminine care to donate to a homeless shelter. Power to the Period is proof that, together, we can change the way we think about, talk about and support the period needs of the homeless in our communities. The Power to the Period campaign examines the many personal needs of those experiencing homelessness and drives awareness of the limited access and places to turn to for period products for these individuals. Holly – you’re the real MVP girl.
SO what can YOU do to get involved?
- Start a Power to the Period donation drive or donate new boxes of period products to a drive in your area from Thursday, July 14 through Friday, September 30. Visit UbyKotex.com, DoSomething.org/Period or text PERIOD to 38383 to learn how to get involved.
- Donate unopened packages of period products (pads, panty liners, etc.), as opposed to individually wrapped items. It’s more hygienic, and it’s important that people see the instructions on the package.
- Visit UbyKotex.com to learn more about other Period Projects and to request a U by Kotex® product sample. Join the online conversation with #PeriodProjects.
Power to the Period is the first-ever national period products drive and second installment of the U by Kotex Period Projects – a groundbreaking series of projects, each inspired and led by a woman who shares the brand’s passion for creating change. The U by Kotex Power to the Period drive is proof that together we can change the way we think about, talk about and support the period needs of homeless people in our communities.
One of my favorite Youtube girls, Ingrid Nilsen, is also passionate about increasing access to period products for the homeless. She also got involved with the Power to the Period donation drive.

What an interesting program.

This is a fantastic program. I just don’t think about women in a vulnerable position needing basic sanitary needs for their periods. I need to pick some up and donate them, locally. Thanks you for sharing this.

I watched at least 1 vid of Ingrid talking bout this. I love how open and honest an upfront she is about issues like this. (I don’t have much of a filter either – so it’s refreshing to see someone opening talk about it). 🙂 We donate monthly (library/Goodwill/the arts/my old college), but I realize we don’t donate our time. Thanks for this post – it has helped with some self reflection. 🙂

This is such a great idea for a campaign. It really gets you thinking about how much you take for granted! I’ll definitely have to get involved!

This really isn’t something that you think about when you are wanting to do something for those less unfortunate. It shouldn’t be such a taboo subject. What a great cause!
